Citgo finishes plant to produce Ultra Low Sulfur Content Diesel

Houston.-Citgo Petroleum Corporation, a subsidiary of Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) in the U.S., reports the construction completion and startup of a major processing unit with capacity of 42,500 barrels per day (BPD) that uses the latest technology to produce Ultra Low Sulfur content Diesel (ULSD) at its refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. With the completion of this unit, which has been in operation since December, Citgo can now produce 100% of this type of diesel at all its refineries.

PDVSA, the state oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, participated in this project through its research unit, Intevep, which took part in the design of the unit as well as in determining the size of the reactor and the catalyst selection.

"Projects like these demonstrate our commitment to the environment and the communities in which we operate. The culmination of this plant joins the company's efforts to further contribute to maintaining a clean environment for everyone and is aligned with the environmental principles of our shareholder, PDVSA, "said CITGO President Alejandro Granado.

The new Corpus Christi Refinery unit reduces the sulfur content of diesel by 99.7%, bringing the final product to a high quality, almost with no sulfur emissions.

With a combined capacity of 749,000 bpd of crude at its three refineries, Citgo is the third largest independent refiner and most complex in the U.S. In addition, Citgo leads the industry in coke processing capacity in relation to its production capacity, making Citgo a leader in heavy oil processing.

The steps required for the production of Ultra Low Sulfur Content Diesel include adding hydrogen to remove sulfur from the diesel and then recover, and convert sulfur compounds to elemental sulfur, which is sold to the fertilizer market.

The new unit has a production capacity of 42,500 barrels per day (BPD) of ULSD, which constitutes 54% of the total distillate production capacity of the refinery, which is 78,000 BPD. The distillate production of the refinery is now 100% ULSD for use in motor vehicles.

In addition to Corpus Christi, Citgo Lemont Refinery recently introduced its own production of Ultra Low Sulfur Content Diesel that produces 100% of this product. Citgo Lake Charles refinery in Louisiana has been producing Ultra Low Sulfur content Diesel since 2006 and currently produces 100% of the product to ensure a cleaner community.

Citgo, based in Houston, is a refiner, transporter and marketer of transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals and other industrial products. The company is owned by PDV America, Inc., an indirect subsidiary of Petroleos de Venezuela SA, the national oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
