OPEC Charter came into existence in the city of Caracas

Caracas.- By the unanimous decision of its founding member under Venezuelan Juan Pablo Pérez Alfonzo’s leadership and vision, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) adopted its Charter in Caracas, during the second meeting held on January 1st, 1961.

OPEC was founded in Bagdad, Iraq, upon the signature of an agreement in September 1960 by five countries, that is: The Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. It is a body recognized by the United Nations Organization since November 6th, 1962

OPEC making creators were Venezuelan Juan Pablo Pérez Alfonso, who occupied the position of Minister of Mining and Hydrocarbons by that time, and Saudi Abdullah ibn Hamoud Tariki (March 19th 1919 – September 7th 1997), Oil Prime Minister

The Charter provides that the main OPEC objective is to harmonize Member Countries oil policies as part of its efforts to safeguard their interest. Moreover, it provides that Organization members shall work together to guarantee oil steady process, assure fair return of capital to producing and investing countries within the oil industry, and furnish a stable oil supply to consumers.

The Charter has gone through fourteen modifications during the Organization 50 years of history. Every amendment and update to the Organization Charter are being on line with the foundation vision of the Organization and have been implemented for its better functioning, with a higher impact on the goals set by the Organization.

Currently, upon the primary intention to keep oil market stability and assess cooperation agreements between OPEC and Non-OPEC countries, the 178th OPEC Ministerial Conference will be held in Vienna, from March 3 to 6, as well as the 18th Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee and the 8th OPEC and Non-OPEC countries Ministerial Meeting.
